Growing New Roots

Did you grow up learning that Kansas was in the “Bread Basket”? While there is some outstanding bread in Kansas (we’re partial to Ibis Bakery in Lenexa), there is thankfully also some fantastic local honey, fruit, and veg for that bread to accompany. Sure, locally grown produce reduces use of fossil fuel to get that food to your table, but it also tastes better!

Visiting a local farmer’s market is so much fun – the variety, the bustle, and the smile on farmer’s faces. But if you pay attention to the license plates on farm trucks, you’ll often notice a trend… Oklahoma, Texas, Missouri. All fine places, but where is the Kansas-grown produce? There are relatively few farms on the Kansas side of the metro area. We aim to support local farming operations and to increase the variety of local produce available in Kansas City.

You are supporting this mission by diverting food waste from the landfill and having us compost it. As you know, we directly compost your food waste, and the finished compost goes to local farms and community gardens. Your participation is making a difference, and we are going to help you make an even bigger difference with absolutely no additional effort required.

Juniper Gardens is a training farm in Kansas City Kansas that grows produce for the local market – that’s all of us! The farm is home to New Roots for Refugees – a partnership between Catholic Charities of Northeast Kansas and Cultivate KC – and prepares refugees to own and manage their own farms after graduating from this intensive, hands-on program.

For every person registered for curbside compost collection by January 31, 2020, Food Cycle KC will donate $10 to New Roots for Refugees. Click here to sign up or learn more about curbside composting.

Additionally, we will donate our first ton of finished compost to Juniper Gardens training farm! We make composting easy, and we want to make supporting local agriculture even easier. So we’re automatically extending this for all the folks who signed up with us prior to this announcement, and no coupon code is required!

Friends, thank you for coming together on this mission. We hope that you are having an enjoyable and fulfilling holiday season!

Yours,
Alan
